HyMarnham Power is shaping the future of clean energy in the UK.
A joint venture between hydrogen pioneer GeoPura and sustainable waste processing leader JG Pears, we are transforming the former High Marnham coal-fired power station site into a modern clean energy hub.
Our £50 million project delivers low carbon hydrogen production, storage, and transportation powered by renewable energy and currently operates 15 MW of electrolyser capacity. Subject to further development, the HyMarnham Power site has the potential to produce up to 300 tonnes of hydrogen per day at peak output.
Our hydrogen production started in 2024 and is continuing to grow and develop to this day achieving commercial operation date at full capacity in January 2026. We are proud to contribute to the UK’s growing hydrogen economy and help drive progress towards net zero, playing a critical role in industrial decarbonisation, off-grid power, and hydrogen-powered mobility.
Strategically located in the East Midlands, HyMarnham Power harnesses existing infrastructure and renewable energy potential to unlock a sustainable, long-term supply of hydrogen for the region and beyond.

1955
Construction begins
Construction began to develop a coal fire power station called High Marnham Power Station
1959
Power generation
The first power generation commenced in October 1959
1962
Fully operational
High Marnham Power Station became fully operational, it was the first 1GW station in Europe. The station was officially opened on 5 October 1962 by Sir Stanley Brown. At its peak, it generated more than 2,000 megawatts of electricity and was central to the UK’s industrial growth
1959-2003
Over 40 years of coal-fire power
2003
Decommissioned
High Marnham Power Station was decommissioned. Operations cease and the plant is officially retired
2009
A new life
The disused railway branch serving the coal station is repurposed by Network Rail as the High Marnham Test Track for rail innovation and development
2012
Demolition
All five cooling towers are demolished, leaving only ancillary infrastructure behind, marking the end of the site’s history in fossil fuels
2020
JG Pears acquisition
Following its closure in 2003 and demolition, the site remained an industrial landmark until it was acquired by JG Pears in 2020, with a vision to repurpose it for clean energy production
